Privacy

The Cape Ann (www.thecapeann.com) is a free guide to events and places to eat and drink. There are no accounts or logins, and we don’t sell personal information. This page explains the little information involved when you visit, sign up for our weekly email, submit an event or report a problem with a listing.
What we collect
- Visit statistics. We use Vercel Web Analytics and our own simple counter to see, in aggregate, how many people visit, which pages they view, the referring site, their approximate location (city or country, from the connection) and device type (phone, tablet or computer). Neither uses cookies or identifies individual visitors. Our counter stores only daily totals; to count distinct visitors it keeps a one-way code made from the day, connection and browser that changes every day and can’t be traced back to anyone. IP addresses are not stored. Counts are kept for about four months.
- Server logs. Our host, Vercel, processes standard technical data (such as IP address and browser type) to deliver the site and keep it secure, as described in Vercel’s privacy policy.
- Weekly email. If you sign up for our Thursday email, your email address and the choices you tick (towns, event types and extras such as weather or tides) are sent to and kept by our email service, Kit, which sends you a confirmation message first and then the weekly email. We use them only to send you that email. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your address at any time.
- Submit an event. What you enter in the event form, including your name and email address, is sent to us as an email so we can add the event and reply if we have a question. It isn’t stored on the website.
- Report a problem. When you report a problem with a listing, we keep what you ticked, your optional note and which listing it was about for up to 90 days, so we can check and fix it. We don’t ask for your name or email address and don’t store your IP address.
- Email. If you write to us, we use your email only to reply and to act on your message.
- Spam protection. To stop automated abuse of these forms, we count how many times each connection uses them in an hour, using a one-way code that can’t be traced back to you and is deleted within the hour.
Cookies and local storage
We don’t set cookies. A device that has opted out of our visit counter is remembered in your browser’s local storage. That stays on your device, and you can clear it in your browser settings.
Services the pages load
Our typefaces are served from our own site. To display some pages, your browser also contacts: cdnjs by Cloudflare (the map software, only when you open a map), OpenStreetMap’s tile servers (map images, only when you open a map), and on the Tides & Weather page the National Weather Service (forecasts and alerts, api.weather.gov) and the MBTA (train alerts, api-v3.mbta.com). These services receive your IP address and browser information as part of delivering their files, under their own privacy policies. Links to organizers, venues, restaurants, Google Maps and other sites take you to sites with their own policies.
Children
The site is a general-audience guide and doesn’t knowingly collect information from children.
Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and the date above.
